Think You Know Coconut? Discover 5 Ideas That May Surprise You

From Gen Z innovation to zero-waste businesses, Filipino coco-preneurs are taking coconut somewhere new.

A coconut may be familiar, but what Filipino entrepreneurs are doing with it is anything but. A college feasibility study has become a Gen Z-run coconut milk business. Surplus coconut shells are being transformed into handcrafted bags while helping provide livelihood to more than 100 workers. And one entrepreneur has developed around 40 products by finding new uses for virtually every part of the coconut.

Around 300 Filipino coco-preneurs are transforming the country’s “tree of life” into fresh ideas, innovative products, and businesses ready to grow.

These are among the ideas and founder stories waiting to be discovered at the DTI-Bagong Pilipinas COCONUTPhilippines Trade Fair 2026, now underway at SMX Convention Center Manila until August 30.

“Over the next five days, we bring our coco-preneurs, our buyers, shoppers and partners together under one roof here in SMX as we celebrate National Coconut Week,” said DTI Assistant Secretary Nylah Rizza Bautista during the opening ceremony.

Across Cebu, Every Lechon Tells a Different Story

At the 10th Cebu Lechon Festival, different localities show that Cebu lechon is not made from one recipe alone.

Cebu lechon may look familiar on the table, but ask the people who prepare it and the differences quickly come out. One town uses more lemongrass. Another adds coconut vinegar. Some still prefer bamboo for roasting, while others rely on closely guarded ingredients to keep the meat tender and the skin crisp.

A mouthwatering lineup of signature roasts from across Cebu takes center stage at the grand launch of the festival.

Jollibee wants Filipinos to taste the thrill of spice

Jollibee Spicy Chickenjoy combines its signature crispy, juicy chicken with a blend of spices, bringing a noticeable kick to every bite. Rather than treating spiciness as a test of endurance, the brand is framing it as another layer of flavor to enjoy.

“Spiciness should not simply be about tolerating the heat. It should be about enjoying what the spice brings to the overall flavor experience. With Spicy Chickenjoy, we want Filipinos to discover that spicy can be exciting, flavorful and, most importantly, delicious,” said Dorothy Ching, vice president for marketing of Jollibee Philippines.

Why Jollibee’s Pistachio Kunafa Sundae Matters to Investors

Jollibee Pistachio Kunafa Sundae

Photo caption: Jollibee’s Pistachio Kunafa Sundae, first developed for the UAE and now also available in Saudi Arabia, the UK, Italy and other international markets, demonstrates how the brand translates local food trends into accessible QSR products that can travel across markets.

Jollibee’s Pistachio Kunafa Sundae started as a local response to a fast-growing food trend in the UAE. It has since become a useful example of how localized product innovation can help Jollibee build relevance across its broader international business, which spans 16 countries.

The product was developed to make the Dubai Chocolate and pistachio kunafa trend — widely described as one of the most viral dessert trends of the decade — more accessible through a familiar Jollibee platform. By translating a premium, culturally relevant flavor into an everyday QSR dessert, Jollibee showed its ability to spot a major consumer trend early, move quickly, and turn it into a product that could drive trial, strengthen menu excitement and bring new energy to the sundae category.

From Hometown Kitchens to City Tables

Regional Filipino flavors find a home across the metro.

The Philippines has always been best explored through its food. The tang of a comforting broth can call Iloilo to mind, coconut and lemongrass can recall the flavors of Capiz, and a richly seasoned dish can lead the imagination to Pampanga.

Across the metro, these restaurants make it possible to travel through the country one table at a time:

Abé

At Abé, Kapampangan cooking comes through in generous, deeply familiar flavors. Biringhe brings sticky turmeric rice cooked in coconut milk, while Sinuteng Baby Squid and Abé’s Farm Sisig add smoky, savory character to the table. For dessert, Sikreto ni Maria Clara layers suman with macapuno, ripe mangoes, and vanilla ice cream. Upper Ground Floor, The Shoppes at Park McKinley West.

Sip the Shift: Minute Maid Nutri+ Brings a Fresher Take for Young Filipinos’ Mornings

You wake up. You scroll. You commute. You eat lunch while answering messages. You scroll again. If this sounds familiar, you're not alone. For many Filipinos—especially students, young professionals, and creatives navigating packed days—mornings don't always feel like a fresh start. Instead, they often feel like a slow drag.

Call it the "morning meh": that low-energy fog that settles in before the day even begins. It shows up during the commute, at the breakfast table, during the lunch break nobody actually took. It's neither burnout nor a crisis. It's just... blah, but it still quietly shapes how the rest of the day unfolds.

Small resets, big shifts

Here's the thing: you don't need a dramatic life overhaul to shake off the meh. Small intentional moments, whether it’s a song that actually slaps on the commute, a hearty meal eaten without a screen, or a sip of something cold and citrusy, can gently tip the mood in a better direction.

Think of it as zest as a mindset, not just a flavor. These micro-resets may not solve everything, but they help pull you out of autopilot, even for a minute. And sometimes, a minute is enough to turn the day around.

World Cellar, the latest destination for wine enthusiasts in Araneta City, has been recognized by the 2026 Wine Spectator Restaurant Awards, placing it among restaurants and cellars worldwide known for well-curated and high-quality wine programs.

This year, World Cellar was given the Award of Excellence, a distinction for restaurants and cellars with wine lists that "feature a well-chosen assortment of quality producers, along with a thematic match to the menu in both price and style. Whether compact or extensive, focused or diverse, these lists deliver sufficient choice to satisfy discerning wine lovers."

World Cellar houses around 2,000 bottles across approximately 400 labels from established wine regions. It can accommodate more than 60 seated guests inside the wine lounge, but can also serve wine to customers anywhere inside World Kitchens. It has a resident sommelier, Benedict Tan, who holds a Wine and Spirit Education Trust (WSET) level 3 certificate in wines.

Presented annually by Wine Spectator, one of the world’s most respected authorities on wine, the Restaurant Awards honor establishments whose wine programs demonstrate excellence in selection, presentation, and service.

For 2026, more than 4,000 restaurants across over 85 countries were recognized, with only 15 in the Philippines—including World Cellar—receiving the distinction. Other categories include the Best of Award of Excellence and the Grand Award.

Located on Level 4 of Gateway Mall 2, World Cellar offers a curated selection of wines, available by the glass or bottle at great value. The concept focuses on accessibility, with pricing kept close to retail through direct partnerships with local merchants. Wines are stored under proper conditions to preserve their quality and can be paired with dishes from the 15 food concepts at World Kitchens.

World Cellar also promotes wine culture in the Philippines by making wine education accessible and engaging. It hosts Wine 101 classes every Friday evening, introducing guests to the basics of wine and tasting. Monthly themed wine dinners are also held, pairing different wines with curated menus to encourage guests to explore a wider range of options beyond familiar choices.
