FOOD STOPS: Ma Mon Luk

I do have a lot of good memories in my childhood especially with food which is where we usually bond and talk. And one of the most memorable is when be brought me to this old Chinese restaurant in Cubao called Ma Mon Luk. Its just the two of us enjoying a hearty siopao and sometimes mami. Though there are fast food places in the area that I also dined at, the memories with this restaurant has been the most cherished memory of my late father.

Sadly, times changed and he left us too soon. Only left with me is the nostalgic feel of the moments he had eating. Today Ma Mon Luk still stands but only with 2 branches left (Quezon Avenue and Quiapo), which I can't confirm in my memory that I also tried those branches, what matters most is the taste and experience that will bring back memories.

Ma Mon Luk has endured the test of time and also the changes in society. With the ever changing Pinoy lifestyle that indulges now on fast food and quick fixes, Ma Mon Luk reminds and takes us back to the good ol' days of dinning out to simple Chinese cuisine which also bears more nostalgic memories.

The restaurant itself has not changed and the tables and chairs were like the ones back in the days (and definitely older). But there is no eerie feel that the building is too old for dining, actually I find it very cozy.Ma Mon Luk started out in Binondo-Sta Cruz which is started as a small MaMi House that eventually grew with the number of its loyal patrons.

Of course their best sellers are the Siopao (P45, P60 for Asado Chicken and Salted Egg Variant) and Shomai (45). They also have their Orginal Ma Mon Luk Mami (P95 small, P105 large) and Ma Mon Luk Special Fried Rice (P120). Also a must try and our HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for this Food Stop would be their Sweet and Sour Pork, which stay true with its tradition of serving authentic Chinese cuisine.   I also loved the Chicken Ala Ma Mon Luk, which is something really one of a kind yet very balanced mix of sweet and salty.

Mr. Sonny Dalay - worked for
 Ma Mon Luk for decades
even up to today
They also mentioned that there were a lot of celebrity sightings in the restaurant both young and veteran ones. As one of its wall testifies the number of famous personalities that have graced the humble restaurant which affirms the reputation of the restaurant to serve good food and great ambiance.  With some of its staff also shows how loyal they are to the service and craft of food service. So why not take a detour from all things new and go back in time with simple joys at Ma Mon Luk.
The plates and other utensils might
be older than my father yet
still works like a charm

FOOD NEWS: Mikey Bustos’ Pinoy Pride in every Chicharron ni Mang Juan bite

Fil-Canadian Youtube sensation Mikey Bustos—the face of Jack ‘n’ Jill’s Chicharron ni Mang Juan— is back in Manila to delight his fans once again.

Describing his last visit, as a “mind-blowing and amazing experience,” Mikey can’t help but feel happy to be back in his home county, surrounded by friends and loved ones. But more than that, Mikey is also excited to catch up with his loyal fans, he says, “I love them all, I don’t know where I’ll be without them.”

Mikey gained popularity among local and international audiences thanks to his YouTube channel Mikey Bustos Daily Videos where his “Pinoy tutorials” went viral with thousands of hits and counting.

He has uploaded a total of 19 Pinoy tutorials, each providing humorous insights on Filipino-isms from local accents to table manners and even balut-eating.

“Our food is one of the many things that add to our rich culture, and being able to endorse Mang Juan and such cornerstone food items of our culture makes me feel so blessed from my deepest of roots,” he says. “I’m honored to represent such an amazing and truly Pinoy brand.”

Despite being raised in a Western society, Mikey makes sure that he stays close to his Filipino roots and insists that he is a true Pinoy at heart.

Mikey possesses a strong and authentic Filipino identity―a rare attribute from someone born and bred abroad―having been brought up in a strictly traditional Filipino household.  “Me and my brother were raised in really old school traditions,” he reveals.  Mikey even has the Pinoy accent down, which is something he thanks his mom for.

“A product like Chicharron ni Mang Juan calls for an endorser who is just as innovative and dynamic in his craft, but embodying the well-loved Filipino values that give life to our country and culture,” says Teree Eugenio, Marketing VP of URC Snack Foods.

Made of dehydrated green peas but with the look and taste of real fried pork rinds sans the cholesterol, the snack comes in exciting flavors that are uniquely Pinoy—Espesyal Sukang Paombong, Espesyal Suka’t Sili and Spicy Sisig. The answer to every Pinoy’s pursuit of chicharon with a kick, Chicharron ni Mang Juan is now available in grocery aisles and households nationwide.

“It has done all the dipping work for me,” Mikey exclaims.

Chicharron ni Mang Juan has truly found its perfect match in Mikey as they both embody that old school Pinoy quality with a modern twist. And just like Chicharron ni Mang Juan, Mikey Bustos’ brand of entertainment always leaves Pinoy fans wanting more.

The “no pork” chicharron, Chicharron ni Mang Juan is available in three exciting, uniquely Pinoy flavors—Espesyal Sukang Paombong, Espesyal Suka’t Sili and Spicy Sisig.

One of the most exciting openings along the Gilmore-New Manila-Ortigas-San ]uan area carne right before Christrnas when Surnosam unveiled its newest branch located at Granada Street, Brgy. Valencia and judging by its lunch and dinner crowd: it’s a hands-down winner. Similar to all its branches, Sumosarn Gilmore carries a vast selection of premium favourites from salads to a variety of rolls, sushi, tempura, tonkatsu, gyudon, ramen, teppan, donburi, and perefectly grilled seafood and steaks. FOOD STOPS: Barbara's

In the modern society we have to day with every world cuisine is now available via the number of restaurants in the metro, it's time to break away from the present time and go back to the simple era in the Philippines. And the best place for that is within the walls of Intramuros.

The famed walled city still have its charm of the old Manila which used to the the seat of power back in the Spanish colonial period. And even if the district was ravaged back in World War 2, it is slowly brought to life by the Intramuros Administration by rehabilitating and rebuilding the glory of the walled city.
Now we talk about going on a historical and cultural food trip inside intramuros, the best place to start is in Plaza San Luis Complex, which I think is the best place that gives that old walled city feel. And in this block, we came across BARBARA's Restaurant. A family business managed by JC Delos Reyes, whose mother is where the name came from. Barbara's is built inside an old house with its furniture vintage as the home itself.
Though the feel is old, the aura of the place is warm and hospitable. They offer a buffet and a cultural night (except sundays) that will let you not only enjoy Filipino cuisine but also a fun experience with performers of different Filipino dances like the Pandango sa Ilaw, Sayaw sa Bangko, Tinikling, Igorot and Muslim dances. Interesting is that these dances are scholars of PLM (Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila) which makes them talented and smart getting themselves through college.
For this stop, we went for the buffet and tasted almost everything . They have Pasta, Cream of Asparagus Soup, Fish Fillet, Lumpia,  Roasted Chicken, Rice, and Fresh Salads. Desserts include coffee jelly, Buko Pandan Jelly and Braso de Mercedes. While dining you will also be serenaded by a banduria, which originated in the Philippines when the cabeza de baranggay   was reffering to a group of guitar players.
For our highly recommended for this Food Stop is the Pichi Pichi and the Buchi bananas, which are great while watching the performance. I also (forced) to volunteer in dancing the tinikling (and I survived). And even I studied inside Intramuros for almost 4 years, this is the first time to experience Barbara's cuisine and cultural night which is also a highly recommended event for food lovers and tourist alike.
